The Nile to Niger project is first and foremost about women coming together to express their worldview. At least five women photographers will travel from Ethiopia to Mali documenting their personal interaction with other women. Traveling through Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Algeria and arriving in Bamako, Mali, our aim is to present to the world contemporary images of Africa.
Over the course of 2-3 months our team will seek out women to interview, film, and photograph so that our work can amount to a book, documentary, and formal exhibit. Our exhibitions will be in collaboration with local musicians to produce concerts, the music from which will be compiled on CD.
The world has yet to see work of this magnitude – women telling the stories of other women through multiple mediums. We seek women who share our interest in the entertainment/art/media industry, but most importantly, we seek women who are willing to share their own personal expressions about life wherever they live. We seek commentary more broadly about womanhood – about life as a wife, mother, daughter, sister. Our goal is to rock the foundation of standard notions of women and femininity. We will document women's various interactions in the context of the political, economic and social complexities of African life.
A) Nile 2 Niger documentary:
The journey from Ethiopia to Mali will be recorded on film to produce a documentary. Viewers will learn about the contemporary political and economic challenges that women face in each country, and how women overcome those challenges. The documentary will also tell the story of our traveling team of women photographers and analyze their own perception of the women they interview in each country. Our mission is to challenge viewers' concept of womanhood and how they relate to contemporary Africa.
B) Nile 2 Niger photography book:
This project will produce a compilation of the photographers' work in a final book. Each photographer will be assigned a theme (i.e. expressions of sexuality, sisterhood, or religion) to shoot that they will take the lead on following.
C) Nile 2 Niger exhibit and soundtrack:
In the major cities along the road, the team will be exhibiting their own personal works in an open-air projection. Along with these projections, the artists will collaborate with musicians by combining a music concert and image projects. The end product will be a compilation of the music performances on CD.
